Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain

What is CBT-CP?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) is an evidence-based treatment for chronic pain and is widely considered the gold standard treatment to help reduce the symptoms of chronic pain. CBT-CP is a time-limited psychotherapy that typically consists of 12 sessions; however, the length may vary depending on each person's individual needs. During this collaborative treatment, Dr. Cheney will examine your pain-related behaviors, thoughts, and feelings to help determine what adaptive changes could be beneficial to your quality of life.

During treatment, you will likely engage in behavioral interventions to help modify the way you attempt to complete tasks to reduce over-activity and under-activity. Collaboratively, we will utilize cognitive interventions to develop accurate thoughts about pain and relaxation techniques to help reduce body tension and emotional distress. Each session you will create at least one goal related to your pain to complete during the intersession.

The process of seeking medical care for chronic pain can be frustrating without receiving clear answers or helpful treatments. CBT-CP does not provide physical intervention to reduce pain, but rather helps you learn to modify your behaviors and thoughts to reduce your experience of pain.

The delivery of CBT-CP via telemedicine has been show to effective while offering the flexibility to receive treatment from your home. Utilizing telemedicine technology, safe and effective CBT-CP treatment from Vermont Health Psychology is available to anyone living in Vermont.
